This quilted wallhanging was commissioned by the Austin Public Library for the newly renovated George Washington Carver Branch in East Austin. I wanted to convey a love of books and a respect for African American literature. I conceived a scene of a boy in a library discovering the rich literary history of his African American roots. My husband, Joe Woullard, drew the figure of the boy, which I then translated into fabric and thread. Each book shown in the library has the title and author of an important work. There are also framed photographs of pivotal African American authors: Toni Morrison, Maya Angelou, W.E.B. DuBois, Frederick Douglas, Langston Hughes, Zora Neale Hurston, and James Baldwin. There are quilted rays of light streaming from the stained glass window.
